WHO AM I?

Hiking Adventures with Vern is an
online journal that reflects many of the
hikes that I’ve been on throughout
the years.

I have been hiking ever since I moved to Calgary in 1978.  Nature has always been a great source of inspiration for me, and there are few better ways to experience nature that to go outdoors for a good walk.  Even better if it is a multi-day hike which includes nights in a tent so that you are in the outdoors 24 hours a day.  Backpacking for several days or more, where you have only what you can carry, is the ultimate hike.

There are many great places in the world to hike.  Most of my hiking has taken place in Western Canada, but I have also hiked, usually with my wife, in many other parts of the world.  Together we have crossed Ellesmere Island in the high arctic, walked the Overland Track in Tasmania, enjoyed several wonderful “Great Walks” in New Zealand, and spent many wonderful weeks on the trail in the Grand Canyon.

I am happy to invite you to share some of these great experiences with me, and to encourage you to get on the trail yourself if you are not already doing so.  It will be great for both your physical and mental health.  You can do it!
